Well, not only did Kasey not stop plucking but now she is back in the hospital. She got put on more medication on Thursday. Then Friday my husband and I got rid of everything in the house she could posibly be reacting to. By this morning the only feathers she had left were the ones on her head and on her wings (which she has started on)! I don't know what to do! I love her so much and it feels like I am doing something wrong. I don't know what I am going to do if I can't keep her! What else should I try? Please help me!! Ashley

Out of curiosity, what medication is she on and for what? Also, does this vet regularly see birds in his/her practice? I'm also wondering what her background is. What all do you know about how she was raised? It's possible she is allergic to something, though insecurity could more likely be triggering this. Though most people don't want to go this route, having a few sessions with an avian behavior consultation would definitely help you & Kasey. In the mean time, keep doing as much reading as possible about greys and parrots in general. Also, when you're around her, remain feeling as calm and "normal" as possible. Greys are great at picking up on the emotions of other people, and if she senses you are stressed and worried, she's likely to feel that way as well.

I am sorry to hear this. I am still wondering if it is something to do with the initial infection she had and/or the medication, or some other bacterial or fungal infection. I don't think you are doing anything wrong.

The first medication she was put on was Azithromycin for a bacterial infection. When I first called her doctor (which is an Avian specialist) she said it could be the medication and to wait a few days. She got worse and I took her in. They said by the looks of her skin she was allergic to something in the house. So, we cleaned the carpets with vinegar and water (that is the only thing they said we could use), we washed all the towels we use around her in Dreft, we bought a hepa air purifier, and I rewashed her cage in warm water and all her toys. This was everything they said to do (we also got rid of all the glade plug ins in the house). She still plucked!! So, I called her doctor yesterday because She had no feathers left to pluck and they said that there has to still be something in my house that is bothering her. I was in tears because I don't know what else it could be. If you could let me know where a good avian behavior person is. I'm in Eaton Ohio and I drive to Milford to take her to the doctor so for Kasey I'll go as far as I hve to. Thank you so much for your help!! Jane thanks for your help, too!! I'll let you know what I find out. One more thing, I use a bedding in the bottom of her cage that is crush English walnut shells, do you think that could be it?

It is best to use newspaper for the base of the cage. The newsprint actually inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi, unlike other bedding such as corn cob (and possibly walnut shells) which encourages the growth of the fungal spores which cause aspergillosis.

How long have you had Kasey, and when did the plucking start (I'm sorry if I'm being redundant)? Also, what tests has the vet done on her? As far as behavior consultants, www.featherpicking.com/Behaviorists.htm has a short list, and probably your best bet would be with Pamela Clark. Her contact info is listed there as well. Even if the plucking is caused by some allergy, I'm sure she's going through a lot of stress right now so talking with somebody who has alot of experience with this type of a thing couldn't hurt at all.

Actually I got Kasey February 12th. She became ill on Monday (14th) and I got into the vet on Tuesday. They said she was very underweight and the did two gram-stains? She had a severe bacterial infection that they said she had had for a few months. So, she was sick when I got her. She ended up being hospitilized on the 17th. We got her back in much better health on Monday the 21st. She started plucking on the 22nd. I really believe that it is stress. SHe did bond with me but she hasn't been in one place for more than a week for almost a month. And from what I know the man I bought her from didn't treat her too good! Thank you for your help!
