Jake is a six year old African Grey, recently his feathers have taken on a ragged, scruffy appearance, mainly on his wings and back area. His diet is healthy and varied, he is happy and talkitive, no emotional upsets. Can anyone shed any light on possible causes?

I am wondering if he is chewing the feathers, not plucking them but chewing them as this can make them look ragged. If that is what it is, increasing the protein in his diet by giving him cooked egg or chicken might help.

I can't remember where I heard of this but a mist of aloe vera juice helps bring moisture up without wetting the bird too much. If this is wrong check with Jane first. I did this with my Timneh and it helped with plucking she also liked drinking the juice

Yes aloe vera can be added to the water for spraying. You could also try the range of sprays by Canopy, there are several ones for the feathers, such as Bath Time and Molt Ease, containing preen oil. Molt Ease contains aloe vera as well.

It could be an infection or a fungus?? I would take him to the vet to have it checked out. Lily was picking and pulling wing feathers and the vet gave me 2 meds for infections-fungus. It seems to be working. I need to take her back to have it checked again soon. She told me to thouroughly clean her cage and toys also.
