Hi, I'm new to this board, and greys in general. I wanted to buy a baby one soon, but saw an ad for a ten year old female that seems to be from a loving home. The owner has a new job and doesn't have enough time to spend with the bird. I work at home and have plenty of time. Does anyone know how greys acclimate to new owners? Have you heard any horror stories? Success stories? Thanks in advance.

I have not adopted one myself but I have certainly heard about greys being adopted. She will have been used to a particular lifestyle with people who she may or may not be particularly attached to so moving will be a big change for her but I am sure if you offer her time, love and patience she will be okay, especially as she is coming from a loving home already. I would make sure that I got as much information about her as possible from the current owner and see if you can spend some time with her to see how she responds to you.

Awesome, thanks for the reply. I will be going to meet her soon and just can't wait. This will be my first bird and I'm excited. It's good to know there's a group here that will be able help me throughout the transition for her. THanks again!

Hi Harry, I'm new here as well... That's great you're considering adopting instead of buying a baby. It sounds like she would likely do well with you, though it will take awhile for her to get adjusted. The optimum is to do it quite slowly, by visiting her at the owners house for short periods of time over the course of a few weeks. Since this will be your first bird, I thought I'd share some extremely helpful books and websites I've found over the years. As far as african greys specifically, read the book "African Grey Parrots" by Maggie Wright *before* you bring any grey home. Also, please get a copy of the "Companion Parrot Handbook" by Sally Blanchard. It's pricey, but definitely worth it. I wish I had had it before getting my first bird years ago. The book "The Second Hand Parrot" by Mattie Sue Athan and Dianalee Deter would be very useful in dealing with the challenges a previously owned bird poses. As for websites, www.parrothouse.com has fabulous well-researched articles with some specifically about greys, also check out www.itsagreysworld.com and www.exoticpetvet.net is a great resource to know about. The amount of knowledge you have will greatly determine how smoothly she will acclimate. Good luck!
