Hi... We got our baby Bella the beginning of Oct when she was 8 wks old. I handfed 3 times per day for the first month or so, then cut back to 2 times per day, and now just once every night. I thought at some point Bella would refuse the handfed formula .. but that is not happening. How long do I continue to handfeed her? (I don't give her alot .. 2 tbsp powder to 4 tbsp water) When it gets near 9 pm every evening .. she is definitely looking for that handfeeding since she starts calling me & looking to fly into the kitchen where I feed her.

What else has she been eating, she should be having a variety of food by now and be eating on her own but they do sometimes want to hang on to the last feed, the night feed is usually the last one to be given up.

She eats a wide variety during the day .. fruits, vegetables, homemade 'bird' muffins, and bird pellets are always available. But it's hard to tell how much she really eats .. because most of it just seems 'chewed up'. I don't know how much is really digested. There are lots of bird droppings, so she must be eating something.

That sounds good. Keep a record of her weight. They do waste a lot of food!

Jane.. thank you so much for your quick replies and information. This website is great. I found a scale to weigh Bella on ... and I believe she weighs 1 lb .5 oz. Is this a normal weight for a 6 month Congo grey? or is she getting to heavy from the continued handfeeding?

I wouldn't think your still hand feeding a 6 month old grey. She should have been weened long before now. Feeding your bird formulated food this long could cause feeding problems in the long term. 1 pound is healthy, but you need to get your bird on an adult diet. Set this weight as your target, and try to maintain or gain from there with seeds, fruits, and veggies. You probably will see a loss since the formulated food is geared to weight gain, but she should recover with a good adult diet. Pete at almost 3 years is 1½ pounds. If you look at my (our) webpage, you'll see the reason for his stockiness; he eats well!

They do vary in weight but that sounds on the heavy side. Mine weigh 520 grams and 487 grams (a pound is 454 grams). From what you say, she is eating a good varied diet so rather than continuing with the baby formula at night you could subsitute it with something soft and warm such as some fruit puree, or try offering her some other treat that she likes. Cooked rice and beans are also popular, cooked pasta, and scrambled egg.
