I would advise you to take him to the vet this time because if you cut them too short they will bleed. You can get special perches which keep the nails trimmed. Polly Pastel for example do a good selection. If you have one in the cage they work very well and you need never clip the nails again.

If you do it yourself, make sure you have the right equipment and read about how to do it first. I took mine to the vet this week and she said she would do it. Come to find out she had no clue and made her bleed three times!! I was very upset to say the least!! Some pet stores have experienced people who clip nails and wings also. You may want to have someone else do it the first time and watch them to see just how they do it. You could also file them and make them less sharp. I have done that too. Good luck.

Hi Sher...was your vet an avian vet? I always recommend taking our precious ones to a vet that specializes in birds. (We have to drive quite a way, but it's worth the trip) Mine files them for us every six months with a sort of grinder machine and Zazzy doesn't seem to mind it at all. He also has his beak ground down, scraped then polished with a special antibacterial cream...looks like a million bucks when he's all finished!!! I really trust her with him. We've been taking him to her since he was 4 months old and he's 2 now, so I think he's kind of gotten use to her.

Tammy-- I was referred by an animal hospital to her as an Avian vet. She wasn't and I am not happy!!! I have written to the hospital who referred her and to her office and also the MA Vet Assoc. telling them what happened. It was a horrific situation. I cannot believe all that happened. You should see my poor baby's wings too. She clipped them and now she tries to fly and cannot even glide--just flops to the ground with a thud!! Hubby is livid!!! I plan to contact them again since they have not contacted me yet!! Very bad experience!!! I now have the name of a true avian vert from a reputible vet my friend uses.
