Hi all. It's been a while since I posted any messages Storm is fitting in well, she is an awsome bird and a constant sorce of entertainment...
We went to see our local pet shop the other day and the guy in charge has four young greys, they were all huge up against our Storm. Is there a healthy way to encourage her to gain a little weight? She has been checked out by our vet who is an expert in African Greys and he says she is fine, she has a very varied diet and is out and about the house most days (she actually stays purched on me for most of it) There is absolutely nothing wrong with her apart from the fact she is slim (compared to the others) Is there anything we should do or include in her diet that would incourage weight gain or are we just being paranoid???
thanks
Simon
Oh and by the way, Don't ever teach your grey to say "whatcha doing?" we thought it would be fun but, trust me IT'S NOT!!!!!

Hello Simon. Good to hear from you again. African Greys do vary in size and weight, it all depends on their genetic background, so it isn't really a question of comparing her with other greys. The "Congo" African Greys actually originate from numerous areas of Africa and this accounts for both the variation in size and the variation in colour; some are lighter than others. The Timnehs originate from a smaller area and there isn't so much variation.
You should be able to feel flesh either side of her keel bone, which shouldn't be prominent.
I think it is more likely that Storm is just one of the smaller greys, especially as the vet has said she is fine.
Yes, you do have to be careful what you say around greys!
