Hi, I'm new here. About six weeks ago we adopted a six year old grey named Rico. I've known Rico all his life--his first family was my sister's in-laws. We watched him a couple of time while they were on vacation. They wanted to be able to travel more and asked us to consider adopting Rico. We were trilled. He has adjusted well to the move and his new home, and seems to be loving the attention he has been getting. He talks quite a bit, but I'm not always sure what he is saying, you see Rico speaks Italian like his first family. So he is teaching me Italian, and I'm trying to teach him the English translations. One thing that I am hoping to provide him with is some sort of play stand. He has a huge cage with a play area on top, with several perches and a ladder, but I'd like to offer him something else. There seem to be several different options--made from natural branches, dowel rods, pvc, and metal. What do you recommend? Anything I should keep in mind? Thanks! Christy

Hello Christy Perhaps Rico will become a bilingual grey! Regarding the playstand, if he is going to be out a lot I would go for something with plenty of variety such as the natural branches rather than the dowel rods type. It will be better for his feet. PVC and metal are also colder and can be slippery.
If you want him to be with you, you might also consider a smaller portable stand that you can easily carry from room to room.

Howdy Christy, When it comes to perches do try to go with the Natural Woods, as Jane mentioned. You will need to make sure that any wood you use is clean of pesticides in case you use your own. Some woods are poisonous. Oak contains tannis acid. Cherry, Apricot, Peach, Plum all have cyanogenic glycosides, which can discharge cyanide when ingested. Woods from pet stores should be fine. My favorite wood goes by the name Bottlebrush. I have bought toys, and a play gym made of this kind of wood here…<br>http://www.waynesparrotstuff.com/index.htm Wayne can say it better than I about Bottlebrush, and other things. He’s definitely opinionated, but a Great Guy all around! Hope this helps. Scotty
