Hello everyone I am new here and wanted to say hi! I purchased a baby congo african grey who came home sat. His/ Her name is Radar and was hatched 9/22/04. Radar seems to be adgusting to his new home fine, He is eating well, and is very active, seems real happy. Radar has been talking since he was around 2 months old {or so I am Told}, but I do know he is now , he says about 6 words very clear and is working on others. He had his 1st vet trip and everything checked out good. I could use some help with one thing, Everytime I get him out of his cage, he wants to be everywhere but on my hand. He jumps and I am afraid he will hurt himself, any advice? Well I have said enough for now, I really like this site and again wanted to say hello! ;D

Have you taught him to step-up, this needs to be done because it gives you more control over the bird. If he has been taught to step-up he should stay on your hand until you put him down. Put your hand in front of him just above his feet and touching his tummy. Gently push his tummy and say "step up", he should lift a foot because he will think he is going to lose his balance. Praise him for this and when he puts it on your hand, keep praising him. When you first get him out put him somewhere nearby and say "down" or whatever word you have chosen to say. Again lots of praise. This training should teach him to stay on your hand until you say. You could also try to distract him with a treat when he first comes out, during the training, to stop him jumping.

Any more luck with Radar staying on your hand? It's been another week and I was just wondering how everything is going?

Radar being a female, how appropriate; my mother should have been named that because I couldn’t do anything that she didn’t find out about before I got home! I'm glad to hear she's settled in. Shoot some pics for our site.

If you email pictures to Preston, plus where you live, he can put them on his website and then you can get one from there and post it.

Just visit the page and E-Mail me 5 pics that are like the rest; 1 serious and 4 I can goof on, and you'll be part of the club. If you don't have a digital camera or scanner, E-Mail me for my adress and you can mail them. I'll send them back after I scan them. I need the City State or Country.
