We had a problem with moths all around our birds cage. Then we started seeing what i guess is something like a moth larvae looks almost like a maggot but not quite like a small worm possibly, we thought it was coming from his food. We would freeze his food to make sure there was no type of eggs in it. That did not seem to solve the problem so We changed his food to the banded type. We also changed his litter in hopes of getting rid of these bugs or whatever they are. is it possible that the bird has worms and is passing them through his droppings? Has anyone experienced this type of problem. Any info would be helpful. Thanx.

I had this problem when I had my conure (yes, I was a bad mommy and fed my conure a seed diet). More often than not, the seed would have white worms in them (like you said, they looked kinda like maggots). They were definately in the seeds and not the bird, because the seed bag would have a web type material in it, usually in clumps. Blech! Some of the seed shells would have tiny holes in them (worm holes I guess), and if you cracked the shell open, it was hollow. I tried different brands of seed, but they all had worms in them at one time or another. I tried sticking the seed in the oven for a little while, but it only resulted in the worms acquiring a nice tan (it didn't kill them). Finally, I kept the seeds in a tightly sealed container, and that seemed to help.
I've been told since than that freezing the seeds for 24 hours will kill any buggies, but I never tried it myself. I have some seeds that I have for sprouting, and I keep them in a sealed bag in the fridge. No problems yet, but the seeds are organic and human grade quality, so maybe that's why.

I had this happen once as well. I get a human grade special seed mix and the time it happened I had got it from a different place. They had bagged it up themselves and I think it got contaminated then. I have also heard that freezing gets rid of them but I haven't tried it either.
It also happened once with a box of treats from a well known company, but this time quite a large moth flew out of the box when I opened it. I wrote to the company but they didn't reply.

Years ago I had a very difficult encounter with a moth which is dark brown/grey and about 1/4in long. I had killed the few I had seen fluttering around and never had an inkling that they had already laid eggs before i knew it they were everywhere in the house. It comes with the seeds (it will adapt to other foods too) especially if it was sold in open bins. To get rid of it, you must throw out all foods or freeze it. Freezing will only be helpful if it was done immediately after buying because by the time you see the adults flying around they may have already nested outside of the bag. Remove all uneaten food from around the cage and surrounding areas where pieces may have fallen. Change your retailer and buy food that is sold in manufacturers' sealed plastic bags. Keep all opened food in properly sealed containers. At the first signs of this moth, drastic measures must be taken to prevent an infestation because it is very difficult to eradicate.

Yes, never get seed from those bulk bins. My mom got my conure some hulled sunflower seeds once. He didn't like them (he preferred to take the shells off himself I guess), so they sat around in a paper bag for awhile. When I decided to give them to the wild birds, and opened up the bag, it was writhing with creepy bugs. They weren't worms or moths, but it was some kind of small bug.
Bulk foods can be contaminated with any number of things. If someone has a sick bird at home, and touches the food scoop in the bin, it can contaminate the food with that bird's germs.
And like Jane said, get human grade seed. The parrot care class I took said that bird seed can have a lot of yucky stuff in it, like rat droppings.

hi i had same problem when i bougt some seed from a new shop and he had old seeds which had worms and other small insects. then i washed the seed and spread them in the sun for all day long it helped me and all insects were gone. but there is a tip i have found to buy uninfacted seeds put the seeds in the poly thin bag and check the bottom if there are insects there will be powder in the bottom. other wise it will be neat .
