When Merlin came home a couple of days ago I was concerned that he was not eating enough. I was told that I was okay to leave his pellets in the cage so that he could eat whenever he wanted. Tonight it seems that he is eating non-stop. Is that okay or should I pull his food?

I wouldn't worry about it, he is probably making up for the fact that he didn't eat much when you first brought him home and he now feels more settled. Mine have their dry food in the cage all the time but they tend to have a big feed in the morning when I get them up and another in the evening.

Joshua is the same, bigger feed in the morning and then the evening, and not so much in between, and the dry food in the cage all the time in case he wants a nibble. Lidia

Same with Pete, full feed in the cage plus what he steals off my plate in the evening.

Thanks that helps. How much of the pellets should I leave in the cage in a 6oz bowl?

As much as you want until you find your throwing away alot then cut it down. You will allways have some waste because of different amounts being eaten some days as opposed to others. I throw it outside for the wild birds and they love it.

I throw it outside for the wild birds and they love it. That's an excellent idea! I can't throw my waste out because I live in the city, but I shall now give it to my parents to put out in their garden. Lidia

That is a great idea for the waste. We have tons of sparrows that I know will love it.

I'm having a similar issue. I was told to carefully measure Nikko's pellets, because they're expensive, and you don't want any to go to waste. So I'm giving him what he's supposed to have, but as he eats them, they crumble, and since he doesn't hold his head over the food dish, they crumble to the floor. When I checked out his floor, I think there are probably as many crumbs there as he got into his belly . So now I'm concerned about whether he's getting enough to eat. I've been hand feeding his fresh foods (to baby him a little), so he's getting most of that down his throat at least. I used to throw my conure's "used" food to the birds outside. They were quite appreciative of his rejections. The squirrels would bury some of it, so we ended up with pumpkin and squash vines and corn stalks growing in our yard. We called it Jesse's garden.

I think this is something you will find whatever you feed them, they are wasteful, it is just the way they eat. However, they will usually eat everything you hand feed them; they have got us sussed out as slaves!

Well, I now have found out that Merlin loves warm oatmeal. He can't get enough. He also seems to be eating the right size meals today but what do I know. When your hungry you eat right?
