We've had cockatiels for a long time now and always gave them gravel. They seemed to use quite a bit of it. I was wondering if african greys also need it. I haven't really heard much about it. Do they need a cuttle bone also? Thanks

No, they don't need any gravel or grit at all and, in fact, it can upset their systems. It's one of the reasons it's not good to put sandpaper into their cages.

Parrots don't need grit. They de-husk their seeds and they also have a chevron pattern of ridges on the inside of the upper beak which helps to grind up their food. Eating grit can lead to irritation and impaction, especially as some parrots will overeat grit when they are given it freely.
