I have read that chicken and other lean meats are OK in limited quantities--so we tried dove today and Avery loved it. Although I am a bird lover and mindful of conservation--I am also an avid hunter. Being dove season and hunting regularly, my family is eating a lot of dove and being that it is very lean--we gave a tiny bit to Avery. She scarfed it down and wanted more. In all she only ate two small pieces.
I am confident that if chicken is ok, so is quail or dove--but how much and how much and how often is good for her? She only ate like 1/4oz. How much is healthy for her? How long between such feedings should we wait?
Thanks,
Bill

I'm not surprised by Avery at all, Joshua loves meat and will eat it raw if offered to him.
I think she is probably all right with the amount you gave her, but I wouldn't give it to her on a weekly basis, maybe once or twice a month.

Just wondering, is there much meat on a dove or quail?
On another side note, I just love baby quail, they look like little cotton balls with legs running across the ground. We had a family last summer of 14 babies, and they only had their dad to care for them (don't know what happened to mom). Somehow he managed to raise all 14 to adulthood, although he looked pretty thin and ragged by that time.

You do not get all that much---but what you get sure is good. You can get a bit more from a quail as they are usually fully dressed vs. dove which are simply breasted.
Both are great though is cooker correctly. No additives, no hormones, no chemicals. Simply good!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the info. No one in my immediate family hunts though, so I probably won't get a chance to try any. I could never kill anything myself (I feel guilt over killing a spider), but for some odd reason, I don't mind eating what someone else has killed (provided I didn't see it when it was alive). I know, doesn't make much sense, but I am a strange one .

I respect that. I am, however, quite different. Growing up on a working ranch opened my eyes. Food animals and pets hold much different places in my mind. I enjoy hunting and fly fishing--will not kill a trout, only release--but will kill salmon like a crazy man.

My Mom's caique is a definet meat eater and she gets some as a part of her dinner just about every night. She is so active that she eats constantly. I think once or twice month is too little for them... They get good nutrients from meat, if your bird likes it give it to them, small amounts is fine.
