I've been reading up on African Grey Parrot for a while now. My Buggy of 14 years past away in mid 2004 and I'm getting lonely, I was wondering what time of the year do they normaly hatch, I'm looking to get it arround 2.5 - 4 months of age (that's what was recomended to me) so I was wondering if they tend to hatch at a specific time in the year.

Howdy Tony, African Greys can be very adept at breeding in captivity. Some pairs will breed year round. Others tend to in winter and early spring. The clutch is usually between two to four eggs. Your biggest concern is finding a breeder that is loving and trustworthy in raising Greys. Not some Bird Mill that looks upon Greys as merchandise to make a buck. Not to mention, Bird Mills just don’t take the time, nor have much of a stimulating environment Greys truly need to be raised. Also your time frame sounds about right for getting a weaned Grey, which I also feel is important. Good Luck! Scotty

Mine hatched in August and October. I would say 3 months is the minimum age to get one as a younger bird is unlikely to be fully weaned.

My two came from a shop which specialised in exotic birds. They bought them from local breeders. You can only really make a judgement on what you can see - the cleanliness of the place, the equipment and food which is provided, whether the birds look healthy and how they respond to the staff and to potential customers. Check that there aren't any ill looking birds around. Would you be able to visit both the shop and the breeder, and bear in mind that the breeder might be supplying the shop anyway, if they are both local.
