My understanding of this threat is that it is carried naturally by wild birds who are resistant to it and then spread by migrating birds to domestic poultry. That was how the outbreak in Asia was established two years ago. Some people have already died from bird flu, but the serious threat to humans is if the virus mutates and becomes easily transmittable between humans. This hasn't happened yet but it is expected to be highly possible.

Hi Jane, How are you? And hi Rashed. You know, I have a pair of African grey, a pair or cokatile,a pair of love bird and their young chick, 1 Red Lored. Total 8 of them living in my house and Im staying in a 12 stroreys apartment with no gardens. I place all of them in my living room and everday, I got to blow out their dust out of my window using fans. It has been many years they live with us, and thank god, they are healthy. It does worry me when bird flu struck Asia, and again, thank god not in Singapore. It should be fine as long as you maintained their cages. Cleaning daily and shower them atleast once a week, right Jane? Just an advice, if you intend to buy birds from the pet store, just look around and judge for your self if the surronding is clean, neat and tidy. If not, go to another pet store then. Those store who are dirty and yulky, the birds heatlh is effected too I guess. Not bird flu virus, but just not a healthy bird... Az.

Fine thanks Airzee. Yes, I am sure we don't need to worry about our pet birds; they would have to have been in contact with infected birds or been near soil or water contaminated with infected droppings. Poultry are much more vulnerable. Some countries either already have or are intending to house all their free range poultry indoors to reduce the chances of them being infected by wild birds.
