Hi, I read somewhere in this site, that there are perches which help to maintain the parrots nails filed. I asked for these perches at the pet store today, in order to be able to insert one in Mina's cage. The sales person told me to cover Mina's stand with a sand paper. The idea sounds great, but I want to be sure that sand papers are not harmful for her in any way. I would like to listen to your advise before I go on with buying the sand paper. By the way, today we bought her a nice stand which she seems to have accepted quite well. She looks really sweet on it!!! No more long hours on the top of her cage from now on . Regards Catherine

I think she would chew the sandpaper off. I know you can get sandpaper perch covers for smaller birds but I am not sure how you would fix sandpaper to a perch intended for a Grey. The nail trimming perches are better and they can be washed.

Thanks for your replies. Unfortunately, it seems that nail trimming perches are not available in Malta. Should I manage to buy one, I will let you know. I will not try to cover her perch with a sandpaper. I rather file them every now and then.
Regards to all.

I file Joshua's nails, Catherine, and it works fine. He is so used to it that he holds his foot out backwards when I ask him to.
However, even though the perches aren't available in Malta, you could always buy one on the internet.

I wouldn't be able to get anywhere near Mitzi's nails with a file! Yes, they can be bought on the internet and this site seems to have all the ones we have discussed on the forum, and delivers internationally. www.perchfactory.com/generic59.htmlJane

Thanks very sweet of you Jane. Thanks for your concern. I will definately have a look into the website you suggested.
That's very sweet of Monty, to hold his foot out. From what I read, it seems that Monty is very domesticated, whilst Mitzi is more reserved. I think that together they form quite an interesting couple.
Regards

Oh don't worry about that!
Yes Monty is very docile and he will let me do anything with him, including putting a harness on but Mitzi is much more assertive.

Hi all For what its worth We bought some " wrap around Sandpaper" forJo's perches from Pets at Home. She picks at them sometimes but most of the time she treats them as normal perches.Any comments on these wrap around things would be welcome. Vance, Lynn & Jo

It depends what size the perch is. Although most of the cages for Greys have a dowel perch in them these are not really the correct size for nail trimming purposes because the nails need to be in contact with the rough surface. Mine have a single dowel perch in the cage, diameter approx 1 inch, but all their other perches are larger and also more irregular. I also wonder if there is likely to be any slithering of the sandpaper cover. I know they work okay for smaller, lighter birds but I am not sure if they would work well for a Grey.

Catherine, Joshty? Montua? ;D As to those sandpaper covers for perches, my experience is that they are no use for heavier birds. They slide off, little wet feet muck them up, they are gnawed and wrestled. On the other hand, if a bird is introduced to them at a very young age, maybe they will do all right. Lidia

Hi everybody,
To say the truth, I haven't yet bought the stand through internet, as I am not very familiar with buying things on the net. However, I've been to the website you had recommended and I read the following
'Online orders are limited to MasterCard or VISA and must have a US shipping address.' so I am presuming that they only ship to the US. What do you understand by that phrase?

Thanks Jane,
I have contacted them. The have sent me the shipping and handling costs will be amounting to $18.30 - without insurance and $32.10 - if insured.
I think that's quite expensive, so I have to think about it.
Thanks for your interesat as always.
