Hello all,
Mina is doing well, nearly 3 months have passed since we got her. Unfortunately, she seems that she has become more affectionate with my husband. When I try to take her in my hands from the cage, she never wants to come, but my husband tries she is more obedient. So I can only take her from his hands. I have 2 little questions.
I usually give Mina raw peanuts. It is alright if I give her cooked peanuts? And is uncooked pasta good for Mina. She likes to play with uncooked pasta, but I'm afraid that she might swallow hard bits of the pasta.
Thanks to all.

Peanuts out of the shell can be given raw or cooked. You can get some which are roasted in the shell but this doesn't reduce the risk of aspergillosis as aflatoxins are not destroyed by heat. They can have cooked or uncooked pasta. Mine prefer cooked.

Hi,
So are peanuts in shells (monkey nuts) dangerous for Grey's because the food i bought in the pet store has these in it and its the first thing my Grey goes for and she loves them, but i don't want her to eat them if they can be dangerous, can you tell me more about this , i would really appreciate it, thanks

Peanuts in their shells can harbour fungi which can cause aspergillosis. This is a respiratory infection which is very difficult to treat and can be fatal. Birds most at risk are those with an already impaired immune system but healthy birds have been known to get it as well. I never feed the peanuts in shells which are sold in pet shops as it is always difficult to know how old they are and how they have been stored. The fungi causing aspergillosis are fairly ubiquitous in the environment but peanuts in their shells have a natural tendency to be susceptible because of the way they are grown. Bad storage can then exacerbate any contamination.

You could try a different type of nut, like almonds, as a treat. My conure loved peanuts, but once he tasted an almond, peanuts became dead to him . Plus, almonds have good calcium in them.

It is a shame because I never met a Grey that didn't love to destroy peanuts as a game. Actually it probably is a bit of a no no but I wipe clean hershey's mini wrapers of any residue, and play chocky baseball with Pete. He loves it. It's hard to get one past him as he blocks it with his chest and shreads the paper waiting for the next pitch.

I play a similar game with Joshua with a balled-up sock. I think it is possible to be too precious about "no nos", so I don't think your paper wrapper is a "no no" as such! Lidia
