They should have a good basic diet which consists of more than mostly sunflower seed. About 50% of their diet can consist of fresh vegetables and fruit. They can also have cooked beans, rice, pasta, cooked egg, well cooked chicken, small amounts of yoghurt and hard cheese. They can have limited amounts of most nuts but almonds are particularly good because of the calcium content. If they won't eat them whole, try flaked. They won't necessarily accept anything the first time but keep offering it to them. They can have a huge variety of vegetables but avoid avocado pear, onions, mushrooms, rhubarb, and raw potatoes. Remove the stones from fruit such as peaches, apricots and cherries and the seeds from apples and pears. Give them more vegetables than fruit because these have a better nutrition to bulk ratio.

The dried mixed beans that come in the bags can be used but they must be cooked because some beans such as kidney, lima, navy, black and pinto beans contain an enzyme which must be destroyed by cooking.
I give mine plain boiled rice.
