Jacks feathers are starting to look ruff. I am noticeing alot of the small feathers around the cage but it doesn't look like he is plucking his feathers. Could this be his molt. He is a year and four months old. I don't know if he has ever molted or not.

Hi Mannie,
It does sound like a molt. Especially with the sudden appearance of masses of down feathers in the cage.
I can't remember if Jack is flighted or not, but if he is, you will probably see the odd feather (not downy ones) falling when he flies or works up to a big flap.
He will be a little uncomfortable during this time, and possibly cranky.

Yes, I think it could be the first molt. He might start scratching more as the new feathers come in as it is uncomfortable for them. Spraying with warm water and aloe vera helps and it is also a good idea to give some extra protein during the molt.

Jack is not flighted. Thanks for the help. I have been feeding him an egg a week since I noticed it thinking it might be his molt. What other things would be good to feed him with more protien in them?

Chicken, fish, cooked beans, tofu, hard cheese, nuts.
Molting can make them feel a bit under the weather as it is a physically demanding process

Joshua likes his pin feathers (the new sheathed feathers) to be gently scratched by me, very gently, very light touch. Especially the ones on the back of his neck. He puts his head down and moves to show where he wants to be scratched. If Jack allows either you or your partner to do that, it might help. Lidia

He won't allow either one of us to do it right now. If he try to touch him other than pick him up he's gets irritable.
