This sounds like such a basic thing i should no, but i'm a bit confused to the quantity of food i should be giving my cag. Still he hasn't touched any fresh food or any new nuts ive been offereing him so he basically only eats sunflower seeds (which will hopefully start changing after i try a few more techniques of feeding Chiko). Any way i really don't want to overfreed him as i already know how bad it is for his health but i dont want to starve my baby so in terms of a mug full (im not good with metric units)how much should he be getting of sunflower seeds?
And we have been giving him food 3 times a day because everytime we're eating his little black eyes look at us and ,just make me feel so guilty, that we have to feed around the same time as us. Is this right or should he be getting food like twice a day?
Thanks again

The quantity is probably less than you think, they only need 90 to 100 calories a day. Mine have access to food all the time, and they always have something suitable when we are eating as it is a flock activity. I have another suggestion for you - try Nutri-berries. These are little balls with all sorts of things in them and they are vitamin and mineral enriched. They can be used instead of a seed mix and instead of pellets or just as a supplement. Mine love them and they come in several varieties. It is Pets At Home again I'm afraid!

I went to pets at home yesterday and the lady in charge said that they have discontinued making nutri-berries but she also said that pets at home there were bringing out a new range or something and they might be back in a few months. I even looked in my local pet shop for nutri-berries they didnt sell them. I might be able to get to another pets at home but (the nearest one to my house was 20 minutes away and i really dont want to make a long journey to somewhere else to find they don' stock them neither.Do they still stock them where you live Jane?

This is interesting and worrying! I have just done a search on some sites and found that Nutri-berries are currently unavailable. A few months ago, another well-known company had to withdraw some food because it didn't meet new EU regulations. It was reformulated and is now back in the shops but I am wondering if this is a similar issue. They were still available in the Pets At Home near me the last time I went a couple of weeks or so ago, but I think I will have to try and visit this weekend and see what the situation is. Jane

I have now done some more research into this Nutri-berry shortage and I think it is the same problem faced by another company (Kaytee) earlier this year.
I got the info below from one site:
"Sorry, currently unavailable due to changes in import regulations. We hope to have them back in stock later in the year. Lafeber Nutriberries contain only nutritious, natural ingredients rolled into berry shaped pieces and coated with vitamins and minerals. Each berry contains the 40 essential nutrients recommended by Dr. T.J. Lafeber which are essential to a birds health."

I have been feeding my grey on a mixture of pretty bird seeds, fresh fruit and veg and other things like treats. However, we hav been warned that seeds is not a good diet for grays as it it fattening.
Over the past few days we have been trying ti introduce pellets, but Charlie win't even look at them.
Do you think this might be the reason for his recent feather stipping?
We have mixed the pellets with seeds to ensure that he doesn't go hungry and to let him know that the pellets are food too.
Should we keep on trying to give hime the pellets or just stick with seeds, fruit and veg?
Thanks Debbie

Many Greys won't eat pellets and it can be hard to persuade them. I think someone on this forum had some success by using the ones with holes in and hanging them up. You can also offer beans, rice, pasta, lean chicken and meat, fish, egg, tofu, nuts.

Thanks jane,
Thats a really good idea! I will try putting them on his kabab stick tonight! That way he might see it as a toy!

I couldn't get my Chiko to eat pellets but i kind of did the same as you only i put threaded the pellets onto a bit of string and hung it in his cage, he loves eating them now, the only problem is finding the pellets with holes in and making them.
