We got our 7 month old african grey 2 days ago, and the guy who sold him to us said that he ate parrot seed. We know for a fact that parrot seeds are supposed to be high in fat and that it will cut many years of there life. And since the first day we brought Chiko back he hasn't ate any of the fruits or anything we put in his food bowl. (We gave him a chilli, lots of grapes, apples, bannans) We didn't want to starve him or anything so when the fruits were in the bowl we put some seeds in there too, and that's all he eats.we're still going to experiment with more but so far all the food just going to waste. He really loves monkey nuts, thats his favourite. My other birds( 2 cockatiels, budgie and parakeet) love most fruits especially grapes. But i dont understand why Chiko doesn't eat any or if he will ever. Is there any way we can try and get him to eat any fruis or veggies? or are there any other types of food i could try and get him to eat? (Everyone in my house are vegetarians so we wouldn't be able to give him that) Any help would be really appreciated

This can be a real problem with greys, especially if they have only been given a limited diet in the first place. Variety is the key. He can have seeds as long as he doesn't have all sunflower seeds - too many "parrot mixes" are mostly sunflower seeds. Almonds are better than peanuts. He might like Nutriberries, mine love these. You can also try pellets. Try him with cooked pasta, rice, mashed sweet potato, peas, carrots, cooked beans, all sorts of fruit and vegetables (avoid avocado, rhubarb, onions, mushrooms, raw potatoes) You might have to try different ways of cutting the fruit and vegetables and also trying raw and cooked. He can also have scrambled egg, tofu and a small amount of hard cheese.

Try giving it to him straight into his beak as well, he might be more likely to take it.

my cag wont eat fruit or veggies from a bowl so we got him a skewer like device which is especially for parrots which hangs from his cage and he likes to eat from that ..

Mine likes to be handed them, or have a bite of what I'm eating. You could try taking a bite of something and then giving a piece to him.

ours wont eat fruit or vedge from the dish so we also have to hang them up and they love chewing them off so at least even if they dont eat it all they are getting some goodness from what they chew up before throwing it on the floor. i even pop bits of stuff on with their fav toys and that seams to work as well. slice some carrot and pop holes through the middle and hang from roof of cage thats how madness started off now like i say anythang hanging gets a nibble. good luck

He wont eat anything from our hands yet unless he's out of the cage and we offer him monkey nuts so i can't try feeding him like that. i tried giving him rice and mixing it with his seeds so Chiko could eat some but he didn't, i tried some cooked black eyed beans (because they look like sun flower seeds so he might eat some, but he didnt) I tried corn flakes, bread, pasta, sweet corn, pop corn seeds things and he didn't eat any of them. When he was out once i got a bannana mashed it a bit then put some seed in there he ate some of the seeds that were a bit loose then threw the paper plate on the floor. And i even cut a grape in half and stuck some sunflower seeds in there hoping he would eat the whole thing but Chiko cleverly picked out each individual sun flower seed and ate it. (Such a fussy bird : So i didn't really have any sucess with them but i did place some grapes on one of his toys he pulled it off, i know he didnt really eat or taste aby of it but its something, and i got some tooth picks blunted the end and placed grapes on them and attached them with a peg to go inside his cage he pulled them off too but when i did it with a monkey nut he ate the nut. I really like the sound of the skewer device thing, do you think there are any web sites that have a picture of them or something or are there any shops that might sell them? ( i live in england). I was also thinking maybe i could get some string and thread some fruit onto it and place it in his cage but i'm worried Chiko might eat the string? Thanks again.

You should be able to get one in a specialist parrot shop, maybe even Pets At Home but I can't remember off hand if they sell them. I got one at a show.
I don't think Chiko would eat the string but he might simply chew through it as Greys very quickly discover the weak point of any device!

Hi , I had exactly the same problem with my TAG Gizmo when he was a baby. Jane and co gave me some excellent advice on the old forum. Gizmo wouldn't entertain fruit or veg at all when he was younger but he eats anything now. He bonded with my hubby and hubby used to eat fruit and veg in front of Gizmo making all the yum noises etc. Hubby did this continously for a few days then decided to offer Gizmo some. To our surprise Gizmo took it and actually ate it. From that day onwards he's eaten fruit and veg. What he does now is if you walk into the room with food he says Hello to you in a creeping sort of voice and if you ignore him he says C'mon in a forceful hurry up I'm waiting type of voice. He takes food off everyone now and eats a wide variety of things. I was concerned as you are as Gizmo would only eat seed at first. As he gets older and the more you persevere he will eventually start eating fruit and veg. Good luck with Chiko I'm sure he will soon grow out of his food problem just like Gizmo did

Actually I've been making a bit of progress with Chiko and his fruits and veggies, quite alot of people gave me advice on diffrent methods to feed him stuff, and he's actually began eating some, he like's his food being poked into his cage, and when he's out he will come ontop of his cage to have a snack. Jane's also advised me about these skewers device things i'm going to get one of those aswell. Thanks for the help

I’ve had my grey 20 years he will not touch fruit or vegetables never as and never will, I gave up with that. However he will eat pellets like pretty bird and so on & Johnsons parrot mix anything else it goes on the floor.
So I’m not going to force him he can keep eating what he’s used to, rather him starve as he will if fruit & vegetables are there he will let them rot.
So I’ve no choice, my friends Grey is the same under no circumstances his won’t touch vegetables or fruit & his is 41 years old, Ken says they are stubborn where food is concerned, but his won’t touch pellets either but mine will.

My grey wants to try anything I am eating. That includes fruit and vegetables. Pellets are good for the birds but they also enjoy variety.
