For the past week I have had a runny nose, watery eyes and an itchy throat, sign that I may be getting a cold or flu. I have been have been very careful with how I handle Trinie and his food/water/utensils. Am I being too paranoid or should I be concern that the human strain of the cold and flu is transmissible to birds?

The majority of human viruses, including the common cold, are not transmissable to birds although it is thought there is a small possibility that human flu might be. I never take any chances with mine though and take care, as you are doing.

Thanks Jane for the info. It is a relief to know that it is not. I wash my hands before picking him up or touching his food and water. I also wear a mask when I have him on my hand.

Not all birds produce powder down and of those that do, African Greys, Cockatoos and Cockatiels are the heaviest producers, renowned for causing allergies. Even Macaws can be allergic to the powder down produced by these birds. I do hope it isn't that though.

For the last couple of days, except for the minutes to replace food, water and cleaning, I have kept myself away from Trinie. Poor guy, he keeps calling and whistling for me everytime he hears me walking by his room. It pains me but I have to prove that my allergy is related to him. ...

Life is wonderful. I finally figured out what caused my allergic reaction and "IT"S NOT TRINIE"!!!!!. I am happy to say, the culprit is sunflower seeds. ;D ;D ;D. Actually not the edible part inside the shell but the dust from the shell. Don't need to go for those dreadful scratch tests anymore.... .

Yes, I am relieved and estatic. I was using the sunflower seeds as a treat. I usually have him sitting on my hand, when he does something I asked him to I would give him a treat and when he cracks the shell, there is something from the shell (I call it shell dust) that gives me the allergy reactions. After finding out I deliberately stuck a seed into my mouth and my nose immediately started running like a faucet and won't stop until the next day. I tried giving him shelled sunflower seeds and when he bites into them, not feeling any shell, he tosses them away. What a wise guy, you would think he did appreciate not having to shell....LOL.
