hi, my name is chez and my african grey is about 10 months old, ive had him for about 4 months. up until now he has been fine. i feed him a varied diet of pellets and fresh friut and veg. and seeds for treats. but todat he has bit his skin and has a big bloody lesion under his wing. he hasnt been a fleather plucker so i cant think what is wrong. his roitine and attention i give him hasnt changed. the only thing i can think it could be is that he is moulting and it is driving him crazy. could it be this, please please help i dont know what to do!!!!!

If he is molting this can cause irritation and discomfort as the new feathers come in and that might have led to him biting himself. Spray him with warm water and you can add aloe vera to help soothe him.

thanks for your advice, would it be ok to put tha aloe vera on an open wound as its about 35cm in diameter. any other advice from anyone would be great. thanks

Can you repeat the size of the wound. You obviously don't mean 35cm but if you mean an open wound 3.5cm diameter you need to get him to a vet. Do you mean mm?

yes sorry i meant 35mm the problem we have it is a bank holiday weeked and the avairian vet is not available. we gave him a shower about three hours ago and it seems to be drying but if we take him off of our hands he goes straight for it?

That seems quite a big wound. The trouble is that once they have an irritated area they will keep going at it. Aloe vera can be used for minor wounds but I am concerned about the size of this one.

we are trying to get through to an emergency vet, but they are engaged and even then they may not be an avarian vet, we are short of them. we are also very worried as he did this in one day so we are scared to leave him alone! we will keep you posted.
