while out in garden with madness we found a baby bird lying on his back on the path, i dont know were he has fell from as there are no trees or bushes around. he was very still and cold.brung him into the house and put him in a tupperware dish with cotton wool pads and hes moving a little and starting to warm up. not sure if anything is broken he moves his head and wings and legs. eyes are closed so i know hes very young, has a few wing feathers and little patch of tail and back feathers coming through. ok so what do i do with him now.i rang a local vet and he said just keep him warm and if he lasts a few hours it will be a miricle as he has fell from some were. so here we have a little baby with no hope so he said. any idears folks. hes sitting on my desk now in his cotton bed wiggling about. been back out in garden looking for a nest but nothing .

There are several possibilities, he might have fallen out of the nest, or he might have been pushed out by the parents if they thought he was ailing. You can try getting some egg food from the pet shop and see if he will eat it. Use a small clean utensil, something like an item from a manicure set.

Baby birds normally get all the water they need from the food they are given. Persevere with the egg food but if they are healthy and hungry they will gape and beg. Is he making any noises?

He is probably in some sort of trauma. He may have internal injuries. What are the feathers like?

Depending on how long it's been in the cold and without food it may be in a weaken state. The best thing you can do is to try and get some food into it's craw. If you can get your hands on a syringe type feeder (small size) and baby food mix (a very watery mixture), it would help greatly. If you have these then you have to make sure you get instructions on how to use it because if you fed it on the wrong side of the beak you could drown it.

You did your best for him. A Magpie or some other bird might have pulled him from the nest and then dropped him where you found him. I have actually seen this happen with a Magpie and a Blackbird's nest that was in a tree. The Blackbirds kicked up such a fuss but it didn't prevent the nest being raided.
