Hello everyone Great forum and advice! My question is: I have the option to buy a 12 week old bird which will be ready fairly soon. But thinking ahead, I have Several holidays booked this summer which i will spend in the uk in my caravan. It is 2.5 - 3 hours drive away, Rather than ask neighbours/relatives to look after the grey whilst i'm away is it viable to take it with me? Do they travel well or is it unfair and will be unsettled? I would love a grey but if it will be a problem me being away 4 or 5 weeks in a year i will reconsider. Thanks in advance.

Greys do travel okay once they are used to it but it can be stressful for them so it would be an idea to take your bird on short trips to get him/her used to it. Mine have done journeys of that length and slightly longer.
I think I would be worried about heat build up in a caravan. Greys can get overheated and need to be monitored if there is a heatwave.

Pete loves to look out the windows, and is funny to watch. He see something that spooks him and goes to the bottom of his cage. He later pops back for another look.

We've taken ours to a cottage we rent in the summer. I bought a large travel cage, a portable food/play stand and a tall portable stand to hang his perch from. (was almost as bad as all the stuff we use to bring to travel for our kids when they were small!!!) The drive was over three hours and like Preston said we took him out for short term rides in our van or car. We found that he was much happier to be out of the travel cage and to perch on the back of our seats. (with some paper towel close by of course for messes) He loved looking out the window at everything and even started to preen and perch on one leg! I guess if you start them when they're young they get use to travelling, you just have to be aware of the conditions of the place you are going to be staying at with your bird when you are away. Try to make it a "home away from home" for him, and ensure you have allowed enough time to become well bonded with your bird first.

hi,
i just took my guy "bubby" to tahoe, from san francisco. it was about a 4 hr drive. at first he was climbing all over his new travel cage, but after a while really settled down. i suggest putting a "comfy perch" in the cage. gives them something to really hold onto. ps it was his first big trip (hes 7months old)

I appoligise; Pete only rides too and from the vet, about 35 minutes each way. I have never taken him on vacation, and I was simply stateing that he is ok with it. Thank you Tammy for pointing out my incomplete post. We need to look out for one another. ;D
