It seems or at least I feel I've been feeding Oakley so good with his fruits, veg's, people food that I haven't seen him eating his pellets in a couple days? Is this okay?? I've been cutting up diffrent mixtures of vegetables for a whole week and he seems to be eating every last drop I put in his bowl, mind you he's the only family member that appreciates his mom's dinners ........... If he has been eating all the vegetables you give him that is really good for him, especially as you have been giving him a different mix, the greater the variety the better. What people food have you been giving him? I can't really comment on the fact that he hasn't been eating his pellets unless I know what else he has been eating.

Would you pass up a lovingly prepared meal for pellets? If you are not opposed to making it for him, keep it up. Pete refuses pellets also.

African Greys in the wild eat a huge variety of seeds, fruits, nuts, berries, flowers, vegetation and even any insects they come across. They also do a great deal of foraging in order to get their food. Pellets are the manufacturers way of trying to create a balanced diet for them but they are still a processed food and liable to be lacking in certain nutrients which are destroyed by heat and light so if they do eat pellets these should only be part of their diet anyway. The greater the variety of food which is suitable for them the better.

I have a list (thanks to you guys and a few books) of all the healthy fruits and veggies they can eat so when I go shopping (every week or so) I pick up what I can find and then come home and cut it all up so it is prepared. In the morning Oakley gets fruits and a few veggies mixed in (usually broccli & carrots) then I change it up with either a tiny bit of yogurt mixed in or oatmeal, I try to come up with diffrent things so he doesn't get bored........ In the evening I give him his mix of veggies (sometimes cooked sometimes not) and usually whatever I prepare for dinner, I grill out alot so usually it's grilled chicken breast and something to go on the side. I have a variety of dinners though for my family and I just usually try and give a little each night to Oakley with the mix of his veggies provided it's healthy for him Dana

Boy those pellets sure smell good though ;D I certainly don't mind cutting all the fruits and veggies for Oakley and he's just a lucky bird he fell into a family that sits at the dinner table just about every night, but even if I didn't cook for myself and my family every night I would probably still prepare a dinner for my little baby bird Dana

Hi All,
I can't get my grey to eat anything else besides sunflower seeds and a few raw peanuts (shelled, unsalted and uncooked/unroasted) . I am not too sure if I should feed too much peanuts so I just let him have about five for the day and he sure loves it. Would it be healthy to just feed him sunflower and give him vitamin supplements? Like I said in the other post in the general section, should I just leave the foods that he refuses and wait for him to eat them even if it means starvation for a day?

I have answered your post about this on the General African Grey board! It isn't at all good for them to just eat sunflower seeds, they are too high in fat and don't have all the nutrients they need. Vitamin supplements are never as good as the natural nutrients and it is also difficult to give the correct dose. Try him with almonds rather than peanuts as these are better for him. See my reply on the General African Grey board.

My AG (can't decide on a name as yet) started eating pellets on Friday evening and all day Saturday, without any seeds at all. I was estatic and just sat on the floor watching him munch it down. Infact I noticed he liked the red ones more than the other colors. Sunday morning I offered him some mixed vegies. after sampling only the peas, he decided it it wasn't his cup of tea and completely ignored the bowl. In the evening I gave him some seeds. And now he won't eat anything at all except if I gave him some seeds. If or when I can get him to eat pellets again, can I keep him strictly on it with nothing else? I am concerned that I may confuse him and then have a bigger problem if he decides not to eat at all. Right now he seems to be happy and adjusting well so I am trying my hardest not to upset this harmony.

I don't think you will confuse him. African Greys can be very fussy and a determined grey will only eat what it wants to. Even if he eats pellets, these shouldn't make up his entire diet. Keep on offering him all the foods, mix them up together so that he has to forage through rather than having them in separate bowls.

Pete seems to want to eat dinner with me, in fact he gets mad if I skip dinner because we had a catered meeting at work. He has his seeds, and fruit (people trail mix) in his bowl for the day. Look at my web site to see Pete have dinner.

Jane, you are right, Trinie (finally named him) eats what he prefers and that's an understatement and he is also stubborn as a mule. Well, I finally got him to eat his wheaties (pellets) in the morning and in the evening sunflower seeds, couple of cashews, peanuts and almonds. Can't seem to get him to take anything else whether diced, crushed, osterized, warmed or mixed. You would think that if he was handfed he would like mushy foods, oh no, this is not the case, he hates it. I did find a food he really loves though, PIZZA. I gave him the cheese filled crust and he just devoured every piece I gave him and kept wanting more, even went to the bottom of the cage to clean it up.

madness wont eat any fruit or vedge unless we hang it up for him . i have those hanger things and put them inside the cage with alsorts on and he usually eats it all but if he dont like it he will chew it until it falls off so i know hes still getting some goodness from what ever it is. i think he see's it more of a toy than food , dont have no probs with stinky as hes nosy and will try and eat anything going lol. give it a try even tie bits to his hanging toys that he plays with . might just work, it did for us.
