Anyone know whether tomatoes are a safe food? Joshua had a tiny cherry tomato yesterday, the first time I think I've ever given him that fruit. But then I realised I don't know if there are any particulars dos/don'ts for tomatoes.

Tomatoes themselves are safe. The stems and foliage are toxic. They are in the nightshade family, the same as potatoes and peppers. The only possible problem I have read about concerns the acidity of raw tomatoes which can cause digestive upsets but I would think they are okay in moderation. Monty loves them.

That's why some stay here; we are all that we need, as a collective. Trivia: Tomatos were considered poison until the 16th century because the acid leached the lead out of the pewter tableware popular back through the ages.

I've actually tried giving them to him since, but they're not something he craves. Pity. It was kind of cute to watch him lodge one in his beak and feel around it (like he does with grapes) before popping it and squirting the juice all over me. Jane, are you a vet or other expert of some sort, or is this wisdom acquired through experience. You are totally a font of useful knowledge and I have already become quite reliant on your advice! And other peoples', of course. I'm in Israel at the moment, and having Joshua withdrawal symptoms. How pathetic is that? Lidia
