Hi Birdie, Welcome! You’ll probably find a split decision on this one. Some of us have had their birds from chicks; we received Pete second hand and had not a minutes problem with him. I would not trade him for anything. You’ll have to make a decision between the amount of time you have to spend between a small bird and one that’s already tamed. The big part here is that a Grey may just stratify to one person, and it could possibly not be your daughter. Maybe take her to see the older bird to check the initial reaction. Either bird may be a toss up as to who is picks. That being said; let’s see what other answers you get

Yes Preston is right for sure,I recently bought a 11 month old Grey and he was a little noisey and very nervous but in the month we have had him the improvement is immense and all I do know after advice from this forum and people like Tammy,Preston and Jane is you may need slightly more patience and loving and then there should be no problem for sure.

Howdy Birdie, First off… why is the 18 month being sold? Do you know the entire history of this Grey? Make sure you get as much info as you can before buying. As for my 2 cents… I would probably go with a newly weaned Grey. Mostly because of the gentleness that tends to be exhibited at a younger age. It could be more apt to work better with your Daughter. But this is no guarantee. Greys can be quite nervous around active children. You might see if the 18-month, under careful supervision, would “step up” between you and you Daughter, while speaking gently to him. This ongoing exercise can develop relationships with other family members. Having a one-person Parrot is not good for you, or the Parrot. Blessings, Scotty

It is not true that you won't be able to do anything with an older bird but you do need to find out why he is being sold to help you come to an informed decision. Some breeders do not use rings, so they don't have to have one but if a bird does have a closed ring then you do know for sure that it is a captive bred bird. The closed ring is put on when the chick is only a few days old. Greys choose who they will like and dislike, they are intelligent creatures and can't be made to like a particular person (similar to humans!) so there is no guarantee as to what will happen with your 10 year old daughter in terms of either bird.
