hello m8s
I have a question that I guess is asked tonnes of times!! What can merlin (well, all CAGS) eat? Is there a site anywhere with a list of Veg fruit and meat? He has a good selection of food, but we just want to know more about what he is allowed to have. Almost on a daily basis there is something I would like to know if he can have - today we had a bap with smoked bacon and mushrooms in it, he was going nuts and really wanted a peace but we didnt give it to him incase there is a problem..................what do you guys think? A site with everything they are able to have safely and shouldnt have would be a well cool idea
we often have salads in the summer with:- Lettuce Tommato Cucumber Onions Radishes Peppers Beatroot out of the jar (in vinigar I think) Mushrooms Sweetcorn Spring onions Cress chives?
can he safely eat the above? ........I am starving now - lol!!!
just a thought - thanks

They can have a huge variety of foods. The main things they should not have are avocado pear, onions, mushrooms, rhubarb, raw or sprouted lima beans, soy beans, navy beans or kidney beans (okay cooked), raw potatoes, raw aubergine, and of course chocolate, anything with caffeine, or alcohol. They should not have anything salty so no bacon, they should not have milk or soft cheese (but they can have hard cheese in small amounts, and yoghurt). If you are not sure, just ask!

thanks Jane, so is all this ok for him then on our salad:-
Iceburg Lettuce Tommato Cucumber
Radishes Peppers Beatroot out of the jar (in vinigar I think)
Sweetcorn
Cress chives?
Another question on the diet front, Merlin has got one of these cages that has got 4 holes on the bottom where you can put the food into. Now one ALWAYS has water, another has his seed mix that we get from or local petshop. The other 2 (and sometimes we and additional one) we fill with fruit and veg from our fridge, the other is full to the top with cooked:-
Broccoli florets cauliflower florets sweetcorn peas carrots
He will have this almost everyday...................now i know this is a hell of alot of food, and loads is wasted, but I thought you were supposed to give him a choice, is this right? Or should I be giving him a lot less but say miss out sweet corn and peas one day, but put in the next? I am confused! I know these guys like variety, but they also like choice (well, so I read) so do I let him have a choice of almost everything we have, or do I hold back on some things, therefor he will have less food, and then the next day give him what I held back on and take what he had yesterday away?
Sorry for how I have written this - hope you get what I was trying to say - lol

I wouldn't give too much of the iceberg lettuce, there are pesticide issues with the lettuce and it contains very little nutrition. Everything else is okay. Variety is always the best bet, rather than offering the same things everyday, a slightly different selection everyday to ensure the maximum amount of nutrients and to stop him getting bored.

Thanks for your help guys. Just one one more thing, our Merlin has a fresh water and fresh seed every day, so that bit I am happy with. We do not give him any of these pellet things - I dont even know what they are................but that aside, how much fresh fruit and veg do you think he should get through per day? If i put all of the fresh fruit / veg in the other bowels, how many bowels do you feel he should eat though a day? Just one, or two?
thanks

It can be worth putting some pellets in with the seeds, this is what I do, but he might not eat them. Pellets are the all in one foods for birds, boring and lacking in essential fatty acids so it is not a good idea to give an all pellet diet anyway.
African Greys need about 90 to 100 calories a day but the bulkier things such as apple and grapes will fill him up so these should be limited, as they are high in sugar as well. I would say put one bowl of vegetables in (try fresh peppers and chillies also) and just one or two grapes plus a slice of apple, or whatever fruit you have got.
