Hi guys, what do these HEAVY clicks mean? Merlin will occasionally make these heavy clicking noises - usually just 2 of them. We thought it may be when he is annoyed, but we are not sure. If it is him being annoyed, then I am guessing we ignor them if we are trying to get him to step up, or a sometihng like that, as we would be giving into him and he would get his own way - therefor he will think he is boss - is that correct?
Another thing we are not too sure about is a diet issue. Jane (if you read this) , you said about there being a potential problem with peanuts in their shells.........is this the case for all nuts in shells, like almonds? We had some left over from christmas, so can he get inside these himself if he wants to? Are hazel and walnuts ok, inc their shells?

The beak clicks are normal, it is something they do and is quite separate from the beak grinding sort of noise. Monty does it more than Mitzi and he often does it before taking food I am offering him but he does it other times as well.
Regarding the nuts, peanuts are the most likely source but it can be present in other nuts, particularly brazil nuts. African Greys can't get into brazil nuts but they can get into almonds. Obviously we are talking about risk factors here rather than any definite contamination but to be really safe it might be best to avoid all nuts in the shell.

thanks Jane, but why does he do this? Is it impatience, or just something they do for no particular reason?

I don't think it is impatience or annoyance. Monty does it (and he also does them two at a time!) in particular when I am offering food, almost like a ritual that he thinks he has to go through. I offer him the food, he does two clicks and then he takes it. Other times he just does it for no apparent reason. I think it is most likely just something they do.

Pete makes those sounds just before receiving a hand out. Romeo, our Senegal does it also. I take it as an agreement that it's ok to take from me. I also consider it as a thank-you.

I'm just wondering if the clicks you are talking about are made with his beak, or are they from his throat? Kiko makes VERY LOUD noises, but not with his beak. I don't know how to explain them, but clicking may be a good way. Kiko makes these loud noises when we are not paying attention to him, or when there is alot of noise from everyone else in the house. Anyway, i was just wondering if this was the same thing you are talking about.

This is really interesting to me.
Abby makes a 'thank you' noise as well, a little whistle. I take it to mean 'thank you' because she only makes that specific noise when we offer her something to eat. Right before she takes it, she whistles this cute whistle. I always say, "You're welcome!"
She clicks and grinds her beak, too. The grinding seems to mean "I am extremely happy" while the clicks have different meanings, most good.
I realized at some point I was anthropomorphizing. (Ok, I was accused of it.) So, I was very interested in knowing that other people attribute their birds' sounds to seemlingly human feelings, too.

Joshua does clicks when he wants me to turn lights on or off. If it is past his bedtime, for instance, he says "goodnight" and then makes the lightswitch clicking sound. Likewise, when I come into him in the morning, he makes the clicking sound to remind me to open the curtains to let light in.
Could the clicks be associated with something other than food? Perhaps they are mimicry of some sort.
