hi guys, we have just got Merlin a smaller cage so that he can come up to our bedroom at night.he is treating it with a great deal of suspicion at the moment, even though we have taken the cage into every room with us, put some of his favourite toys into it and have left the door open when we play with him near it. we have been so lucky so far with Merlin- he is potty trained, he loves being out of his cage as well as playing with his toys in it, and adores being on my shoulder whenever i am writing letters, snuggling up against my neck making a lovely almost "purring" noise whenever he is being stroked and fussed. neither of us imagined that a bird could be so lovable and affectionate, and we dont want to spoil things by freaking him out with this new cage! But he needs to start usuing this cage for night times, as its far safer with us upstairs, and warmer for him! Any ideas?
thanks in advance.

They are always nervous of new cages and sometimes you think you will never get them in. I know this may sound silly but make a big fuss of the cage, show him all the parts of it, tell him what it is for, and even put your head in it if it has the sort of door that will let you do that! Show by example that it is nothing to be frightened of. A young grey like Merlin will be looking to you for guidance. Hold him up to the cage, see if he will stand on top of it, hold a treat inside the cage and tell him he can have it if he goes in. They are so clever, they always understand what you are trying to do even if they don't want to do it. If you are lucky he may let you put him in but otherwise curiosity will eventually get the better of him.

We bought a beautiful African Willow Tree from e-bay, and when it got to the house I was so excited. It's just too bad Kiko wasn't feeling my enthusiasm. He wanted absolutely NOTHING to do with it!! I left it in the living room right across from his cage so that he would be staring at it all day while I was at work. As a matter of fact, I was given advice by Jane and Preston, and it worked just fine. But I will tell you that it took Kiko a good 2 and a half to 3 weeks to get used to it, but now he LOVES it!! He swings upside down and just has a ball on it. My husband was sure he would never get used to it, but I told him to be patient because I learned - again from these wonderful people here - that these beautiful birds that we are blessed to share our lives with, are extremely cautious and tentative about new things in their world and Patience is the key. So saying all of that, I want to wish you the best with Merlin, and I am sure he will be sleeping in your room in the very near future.

EXACTALY Thank You so much for displaying the patience we we try to teach. This is a large step to learning a Grey. Way to go, Mary Anne! I'm being serious, there is the step you needed to make; the rest is gravey! Keep it up. Get me some pics for the site.

I couldn't find a picture of one, but can tell you that they are seriously looking at the bark, as a cure for cancer. BTW, I set your avatar up, did you not get my E-Mail?
