Hello,
I am BRAND-new here. My husband and I bought a 2-year-old male Congo yesterday from a breeder who has a pet store that specializes in birds. Kenya came from couple who has had him since he was a baby; actually purchased him from the breeder I got him from yesterday. This couple ended up divorced and the wife got Kenya and decided to sell him. The pet storeowner, who’s a lady, was able to handle this bird, she could hold him upside down, and he loved her. I told him to "step up" which he did, although bite me several times while holding him. I figured that it was just because of the environment (lot's of people walking by his cage) being in the pet store and also loosing his human parents...how sad! So we paid $890.00 and left for our 2-hour drive home.
I've been around lots of birds in my life, and know that this bird is NOT happy. He is eating and talks very well; he just doesn't want to be touched. He lunges at my children when they walk by. Fluffs out, and grinds his beak together. When he's in his cage, he will put his head down so you can scratch him through the bars, but will try to attack you after you touch him.
I have many bruises and cuts on my hand and have to admit, that I am now scared of him! I’ve NEVER been afraid of birds, have handle many. We used to be part of a caged bird society, but this bird…well he’s unpredictable, he almost acts like a bonded breeder. I put a glove on today (trying to protect my wounds) he got a bit frightened and flew onto the floor. I was able to have him step up, but when I put him in his cage, he grabbed onto the palm of my hand, using lot’s of power, which has given me another bruise to add to my collection.
I've decided to keep my space, and talk to him from a distance...but really don't want this to be a behavior that will continue. I didn't spend over $800.00 for a pretty, talking, but aggressive bird, who you can't touch and have to be fearful of...I desired a bird I could love and spoil.
I asked the owner if he doesn’t work out if there is a return policy. She mentioned no not normally, but because she loves this bird and would have taken him if she didn’t have so many already, that she would work something out. She has Congo baby’s that just hatched.
Any advice and help would be appreciated. Thanks for all the help guys...I truly have the best of intentions...but am wondering if I made the wrong mistake, and should have gotten a baby Congo.
