Hello, I have a fourteen year old African Grey. I have owned it for 10 years. At certain times in a year it would go through a phase where it will bring up this slimy stuff and swallow it again. This time this behaviour has lasted for over three months. It's got to a p point where it's virtually doing it constantly.i appologise for referring the bird as "it". This is because I have not had the bird sexed. i would dearly appreciate any advise. Is this a health issue? Thanks in advance

Regurgitation is something they usually do from time to time. They do it in the wild for mates and chicks. Captive birds will do it for a favourite person. It normally looks like mashed up food and is fairly solid. This is perfectly normal but it isn't something captive birds should be doing all the time. What sort of food is he/she eating?

Pete does this only when he gets excited or swallowed something to large. This happens rarely though. I'd have him checked out by a vet.

We get the parrot mix from the local aviary and give him fruit and veg.

Maybe he/she has got into the habit of doing it for some reason. Normal regurgitation is usually in response to a stimulus - seeing a favourite person and getting a bit over excited. I discourage mine from doing it by distracting them.
