HI I'm a new mom of a 5 week old red tailed parrot. I have now had him for a week. He normally eats very well at his feed times, but this morning he did not want much food. Should I be concerned? Before every feed I make sure his crop is empty, so no bacteria can occur. Could there be some other reason for this. I feed him on a product called AVI + for hand rearing parrots.

Karen Are there any other signs of a problem, such as a change in the droppings, sleeping more than usual, or just not his usual self? Weighing him daily is a good idea at this age so that you can check if he is losing weight.

I've never hand fed a Grey, buy have experienced 8 C.o.c.katiels being parent raised. The feeding times got farther apart with age very quickly. The bird may just not be hungry on the schedule your used to. Just a thought.

Karen, when we handfed Dandy we learned that Dandy was extremely particular to the temperature of the food. When it got too cold, he refused to eat one more bite, and when we heated it up a bit, he'd be ravenous again. Just a thought....... let us know how you fare P.S. Be careful the food is not too hot though, you may risk crop burn. Strangely enough baby parrots do not reject food when it is too hot, only when it is too cold.

Hi Thanks for all the advice, I have notice he does not want to eat much at lunch time. I do leave peanuts in his cage during the day as I have notice he is starting to nibble on them. From what age do you think he will start eating on his own, and when you do think I should slow his meals down. He is 8 weeks old tomorrow 1 Feb 2005

The lunchtime feed is the first to go, the morning and evening the last but he won't be eating entirely on his own for about another 4 weeks. Take the cue from him really with regard to the feeding, he will let you know. You can start to provide cut up fruit and vegetables for him to explore as well.
