Happy New Year everyone.
I just dont understand what is happening to my boy.
He has had a history of plucking but before only because of dermatitus and this was sorted.
Then he starting pulling feathers out, out of excitement. Whenever i went near the cage and I made a fuss of him, he used to grab the feathers out, as part of his excitement as if he was giving his feathers to me.
Before Xmas, I was playing down the fuss I was making and he didn't pluck as much cos i didn't make much eye contact when he was in the cage.
I have been on holiday over xmas so he stayed with my parents. When I picked him up yesterday, all his feathers had grown back.
He was out of his cage all evening last night and he went in on his own accord for bed. Throughout the night, I could hear him bouncing around the cage, playing with toys and talking. He was obviously too exciteable to sleep and im not sure why. He wasn't stressed and he was behaving normally albeit a little erratic but he was not stressed out or upset. He has on about two other occasions stayed up all night (i can hear him) but this was during his skin problem time and it was obviously too itchy for him to settle down.
When I came into the room this morning, he had plucked all the feathers around his neck, some of his back, his legs and some of the red tail feathers at the start of the base of the tail. His cage was like a feather carpet.
He is still exciteable and running around his cage and chatty although he is having an argument with one of his toys.
I just dont know what to do. He clearly isn't stressed. He is happy to be home. As we know, a withdrawn parrot sits quietly in a corner all ruffled up. He is being the complete opposite.
In case he has a mite problem again, I have just sprayed him with some TCP water and he has actually settled down. I sprayed him about 10 minutes ago while I was getting this site up, and this must be longest 10 minutes he has been quiet for.
Is there such a thing as plucking because caused by excitement? I have already associated that he plucks with excitement so i guess this is something that does happen. I only just mastered this before I went on holiday but its obviously come back ten-fold.
Does anyone have a problem such as this?
Thank you.
