hi, i have a question my sheroo i think will never learn to talk may be thats why he was sold off by his last owner .as i bought him full grown from a pet shop but he wistels a lot in his own way (CAG wild shouting) and when i reply to his wistels he does it more and wants me to reply him every time he makes a sound thats all morning till noon after that he becomes quite but he seems to enjoy my replies to his wistels well will he ever learn to talk as he is becoming more and more vocal in wisteling these days? or will he only keep wisteling all his life???

He may decide to start imitating you if you imitate him when he whistles, it is an interactive process.
Don't give up hope, but enjoy him for what he is, it could take him a long time to decide to speak.

Many talking Greys pick up whatever they want to say regardless of how often they hear it but if Sheroo enjoys whistling maybe you could try saying words or phrases in an excited sing-song sort of way as they will often pick up things which are said with a lot of emotion more quickly than normal talking.

Mina is pretty similar to your bird, she whistles a lot, in all kind of manners. We have recorded a cassette with a lot of hellos. We tend to play the casette when we are not around and she loves it. She tries to say hello, but till now she only manages to whistle somthing like eeeooo which I believe that she will be trying to say hello. So don't give up, and enjoy your birds amazing whistles.

thankq everybody for encourageing me and giving great ideas i will definately try them as it is possible that sheroo might get intrested by one of them and one fine day speak something but i still enjoy his wistels as they are real sweet ones and i know he enjoys me repling the same wistels as he gets excited when i reply and looks in my direction after every wistel he makes so i love him also he has some good manners like pooing when i ask him and waliking to his stand and he loves to be indipendent by climbing on his stand on his own . so i love him for what he does

Just to illustrate the combinations of noise/whistling/speech that our AGs can come up with:
I bought Joshua a rubber squeaky chicken last week. He kept attacking it, jumping on it to make it squeak. Then he started making the squeaking sound exactly. Now he is saying "Helloooooo" in a squeaky rubber chicken voice"! You'd have to hear it to believe it!

I once went to a bird park where there were quite a lot of African Greys in a large enclosure. They were all whistling to each other as they would in the wild and it was a beautiful sound.

Jane That must be how Nikko's previous owner taught him to talk, because most of his words/phrases are in a sing-song voice. My mom says he sounds like an old lady .

Some say that birds learn more easily from female voices but Mitzi doesn't sound like me or anyone really, she has her own voice. Interestingly, studies have shown that when talking to human babies, both men and women raise the pitch of their voices. This is universal across many cultures and is thought to be an instinctive reaction to a baby in order to help it learn to talk. Called "infant directed speech" the other characteristics are melodic intonation, shorter sentence lengths, repetition, and exaggerated facial expressions, all of which babies respond to and enjoy more readily than normal speech, although whether they learn faster is debatable. Much the same as with Greys then!

My Lily talks in my voice and my hubby's also. Along with her own . She mimicks our phone conversations in the correct voices and phrases. Very funny!!
