What is the best way to get an AG to settle down for the night?
We tried to put a sheet over the top of the cage at night time and she went ballistic and didn't like it.
Any reccomendations?

If she doesn't like the sheet, don't use it. Joshua is the same, hates them, throws a total fit if I even try. If she's in your sitting room with you, just let her be, she'll quiet down when she wants to. If you put her in another room to quiet her down, she might freak because she knows there's stuff going on in the sitting room (tv, talking, etc). I know other people have a room for their bird(s) to sleep in, but this would really upset Joshua, sleepy or awake, he wants to be where the action is. Joshua, for example, goes back into his cage and tells me when he wants to go to bed by saying "goodnight". I appreciate that Jasmine doesn't do this (yet), but once you get into a routine with her so that she knows approximately when she will see you in the morning, and when you are inclined to go to bed at night, she will get used to your routine and adjust herself to it. When you go to bed and turn the light out, and she doesn't hear life continuing to do things without her, she will go to sleep and probably won't wake up again until it's light outside or you wake her up. AGs sleep quite a lot, so don't worry about her being by herself at night or for a few hours during the day. In a nutshell, chill, let her settle herself. Don't push her, let her take her time to settle into your routine. Lidia

You need to get into a routine for bedtime. Tell her it is bedtime and keep to the same ritual. If she hasn't been used to being covered up she will find it frightening. I cover mine but not everyone does cover them at night. You could start by just covering part of the cage and slowly cover more each night. I tell mine it is bedtime and time to go to sleep and they climb onto their sleeping perches. I cover them up and play them their lullaby because they have had it for years! (Brahms Lullaby).

Nikko and I have a bedtime ritual. First I take the poopy papers out of his cage, and wipe up debris that has fallen around the cage. Then I take his dirty dishes out, and go get clean ones (from the kitchen I can hear him saying "good night" over and over). He gets very excited when he sees me return, because he knows there will be a bedtime treat in the food cup (either an almond or pine nuts, and a tiny piece of cookie). He usually rushes into the cage before I can get the dishes in. I close the cage door, and turn off the ceiling light (a lamp by his cage is still on). I sit on the bed while he eats his treats. When he's done, I place the cage cover partway on his cage, and quietly talk to him for a little while, and tickle his toes. Then I finish covering him, turn the lamp off, turn my closet light on as a little night light, tell him good night, and shut my bedroom door so he isn't disturbed by any noise. I don't hear a peep out of him. He seems to be happy to turn in at night (I tuck him in at 8:00 PM).
