I have read all the articles and postings on plucking, and molting, but how much feather loss is normal.
Cheeno tends to pull out the down feathers, there are always a lot of down feathers all over the place, and I haven't actually seen him pull other feathers but I have noticed about 3 to 5 per day in the bottom of her cage - the light grey neck feathers (between neck and wing - I was scratching her and 2 fell out) I have also found a few of the light grey longer feathers from the top of her wings.
Is it normal for them to lose so many of these feathers?? I believe she is still molting. I spray her with aloe, and I humidify often. I haven't caught her pulling them, but I always find the feathers after being out of the room.

The little bits of down are lost on a daily basis even when they are not molting, and a few smaller feathers can also be lost. During the molt the number of feathers does increase quite considerably and you will be able to see and feel the new ones coming in. The molt can take several weeks.

Trinie started a light molt about six weeks ago. He lost feathers from around his body. It was hardly noticeable, the only indication that he was molting, was the lost of red body feathers. His molt continued to his head and he is now lost a couple of tail, neck and wing feathers, not the flight ones which I think will be the last to drop. I have to also mention that he is producing a lot of feather fluff now, it's coming from him fluffing and shaking his feathers or from his beak when he plumes himself. Luckily no dust yet.
