Hello... I'm new here and I need some advise...please. I've got a 13-year old AG and I've only had him for 3-months. He has chosen me as his "friend" which makes me more in charge than the others in our family. Rolf(the bird) WILL NOT sit on my hand but he will come to me in the sofa if I call for him, he wants me to stroke him on the head, which I do. if I walk away he'll fly to me and sits on my shoulder, but I don't dare take him down with my hands I just walk to the cage and "drops" him of. He absolutely HATES hands.... we knew this when we bought him. He is a very nice bird, he talks a lot, copies everything, especially my voice.....sounds a little bit spooky sometimes *lol* I don't really know what to do, he seems to like it a lot here because he's very sociable. He has bitten me before but not to hard, it didn't bleed, but I don't want him to do it again. Does anyone have any advise on what to do? Ewa & Rolf

I'll let someone more knowledgable answer the main part of your question, but I do have a little advice...aloe gel. It soothes the pain of a bird bite really nice, and will make it heal faster.

Greys are often quite wary of hands, even tame Greys can be a bit like this, even when they have no reaon to be. However, it might be that Rolf has never been trained to step up and just isn't used to being on hands. There are two possibilities. You can either try to train him to step up to your hand or you can train him to a stick; there are some Greys that can only be carried about this way. Watch out for his body language so that you can tell when he is likely to bite. Distract him from biting with toys or treats.

Thanks Jane...
Rolf is already going to a stick and sits on it for a second or two. I get a little confused though.... sometimes he makes a happy noice when I train him on the stick and sometimes he gets twice as big and looks angry *lol* I do think I'm on the right track because he comes to me every day and wants me to give him a "cuddle". He's even following me by walking on the floor when I'm in the kitchen and says come...which means that he wants a cuddle. thanks for all advise.....need more all the time.

That is very good progress. They can be quite moody which is why he sometimes makes the happy noise and sometimes fluffs up and looks angry. You will get to learn the body language he uses to communicate with you. Rolf sounds a very nice Grey.
