Ok, I know they preen themselves and each other but Jake is preening me everytime he gets close to my hair. I don't mind and it seems to relax him. I am wondering if anyone else's birdie does this. Is it ok to let him or is it bad?

I think it just means he loves you. My AG doesn't preen me (at least not yet), but my conure used to.

Monty preens my hair every morning when I am cleaning out the cage. He comes over especially to do it. When I first had him he used to preen my eyelashes extemely carefully and gently (he stopped doing this and I wouldn't let him now anyway). Bonded birds preen each other, not just mated pairs, so it is only natural that they will preen their humans. Funnily enough though, Mitzi rarely preens my hair and it is very perfunctory. She will give a strand of my hair one quick preen and then put her head down to be stroked. Monty and Mitzi don't preen each other and never have. It is okay to let them do this; in my experience it has never led on to mating behaviour.

Ooo, you're so lucky. Joshua has NEVER preened me. I would love to be preened by him. It's a very one-sided affair.

Chivalry will often preen my hand before he lets me pet him, as though he's making sure I'm clean enough to touch his pretty feathers. He has also taken to preening my hair (which hurts as he tends to pull a bit), and climb to the top of my head using my hair as a ladder. I'm sure it makes quite a sight....

When I lean my head close to Trinnie, he will preen the hairs on my head and my eyebrows. I think he likes it better when I am preening him though.

wow. It's nice to hear that its ok. I can't believe he would have bonded so soon. I have only had him for 2 1/2 weeks. He loves to get neck scratches and head rubs. I guess he thinks I am preening him too. Wow.
Thanks everyone.
