My African Grey has recently shown signs of ragged breathing, a clear mucus discharge and extreme feather plucking. I have not changed his source of food, I still buy it at the same place as I always have, have not introduced any new or unusual toys and have not changed the way I interact with Merlin. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I am becoming quite concerned.

Hi Bud, Ragged breathing and nasal discharge indicates that it has a respiratory ailment, probably a cold. If it is not treated immediately it will become more serious and detrimental to the bird. If you have other birds, isolate the sick, wash everything that may infect the others or contaninate their cages, food or water with a mixture of water and 10% bleach. Rinse thoroughly before using. Avian flu is highly contagious so please get your bird to a vet asap.

Take him to the vet. Don't waste any time, he needs to be medicated and the sooner you take care of this the better. Let us know what the vet says. Lidia

Agreed. Birds are good at hiding their illnesses, so when they're no longer able to hide it, it's serious. My vet says they have a lot of people who bring there birds in at the 11th hour, and by that time, it's often too late. Hope everything works out for you two.
