hi-i am new i bought my cag from an aviary,as i could not afford to buy a hand reared bird.i was told that s(he) is about 9 months old- she has a yellow ring around the eyes, she chirps alot, mostly sits on her cage, when approached she has stopped growling ,sometimes steps up,but bites a lot!! will i be able to train her- and hopefully get her to talk? or am i asking too much from an aviary parrot? thank you

Hello, welcome to the forum. There seems to be some positive progress going on already as she has stopped growling and is stepping up so it could just be a matter of time and patience. She may be older than 9 months if her eyes are yellow. Try offering food directly into her beak, especially at the time you are eating, as food is one of the best ways to form a bond. There are quite a lot of threads about biting on the forum, you are not alone there! Not all Greys talk but keep talking to her as much as possible and always tell her what you are doing, what you are giving her etc. so that she learns to associate words with events and objects.

hello thank you i have been looking at loads of pictures of greys,i realise now she is 12 months plus- i was told she was 9 months as she was smaller than the rest, and her eyes were a lighter yellow colour, than the others in the aviary does this mean she will not talk ever?? i have had her for 5 weeks , she seems to be listening to me,chirping, and steps up when she wants to-if she flies on the floor then it is not a problem i have been advised to have her wings clipped, and will try feeding her- she takes monkey nuts from me no problem does everything just take longer with an aviary cag ??

There is a wide range for talking, some start at only a few months old, others not until they are two years or even older. However, some don't ever talk. I have a talker and a non-talker. Greys, especially Congos, do vary in size. A parent reared Grey will usually take longer to tame than a hand reared but they are all individual in personality and she sounds as if she is coming along very well.

hello- thank you,i did not buy her just to talk,i mainly bought her for companionship for my wife as the kids have just started full time school tonight we spoon fed her peanut butter, and cauliflower, and she has been stepping up a lot as well all sounds good as we have only had her 5 weeks!!! also would it be a good idea to remove her cage during the day and swop it for a play stand or table stand as she sits on the cage all day and gets a bit defensive about it.

It is good for them to have a stand as well as the cage. It is quite common for them to get territorial about their cages but the ideal situation is when they have more than one place to go and are equally happy wherever they are.
