I know there's info on potty training in the FAQ, but it tells how to. I'm curious when you should start this training. My TAG is 16 weeks, is she too young? My husband laughs at me when I tell him I plan to potty train her, he says it can't be done! I hope she'll let me SHOW HIM, by picking this skill up. Michelle

You can start as soon as the bird can perch properly and has been trained to step onto your hand. 16 weeks isn't too young.

I would have thought that the earlier the potty training begins, the better! Then it becomes an ingrained behaviour that is very useful indeed!

There is no set age because all you want them to learn is the meaning of the word you want them to assocate with pooping. There is a precaution in training very young babies though, care must be taken to prevent them from having "an only pooping spot" or "only on command". If you were away for long periods a day, they may hold their stool until you return to take them to the designated area or until you give them the command to. This can cause health problems because birds have a very high metabolism they need to eat and go very often.

I started my bird at around 6 months. Our method is that she goes in the trashcan. As soon as we take her out of her cage, she gets put on the rim of the trash can and say the key words. (Don't worry - i'm careful to make sure it's clean & she can't get to the trash). So now, she generally says that she has to go. (And when she says it, we *run* to the trashcan!) We always reward my bird with a treat afterwards, so now when she wants a treat really badly and if she's already on the trash can, she'll squeeze any little drop she's got, just to get rewarded. it's pretty sad, really. But, we're both happy: she gets her treat, and I don't get shat on.
