As most of you know, Kiko is 14 months old now. Every day I love him more. Imagine that I have a "pet" that can make me laugh many times a day! What a world. I have a question for the veterans of the African Grey. Kiko still has a few grey feathers in his tail, but they have been slowly growing out into the beautiful dark red ones. At what age do they lose the last of the long grey ones, and have only the even dark red ones? I am only wondering so that I know my gorgeous guy is on track. The truth is, I wouldn't care if he was behind, but you know about curiosity! Thanks in advance.

Mary Anne, Since Greys are such individuals, it's hard to place a time on any aspect of their development. Pete had a full red tail when we received him at 6 months. He looks just as nice as the rest of the birds on my page, so I wouldn't worry about it. Regards, Preston

:)You are absolutely right Preston!! I was visiting your site, as I do every day to see the new additions, and I am amazed at how unique and beautiful each and every one of them are! They all have their own expressions and personalities that come through even in the pictures. Of course,I think my Kiko is the BEST looking, lol. P.S. Great job on the site!!!

Some young CAGs have grey in their tail feathers, others don't. After the first molt is complete they should all be red. They always have shorter and longer feathers in the tail, the shorter ones are called the coverts and it is on these shorter ones that a delicate silver edging may be visible on a female CAG.

Mary Anne, Their individuality allows me to pick a theme, and comment on each picture. Unless you own one, they all look the same. Pete may not be the best looking bird on the block, but he is quite the screwball in personality; with his ability to ask for what he wants. I couldn't want for a better Grey.
