Just wondering, what do you use for bathing your grey? Mine is a four-year old Congo and tollerates but doesn't enjoy a warm shower. He tries to bathe in his water dish, but it is very small. Are there any place to get large, hard to tip over bowls that could be left in his cage for bathing? Any suggestions? Thanks! -Faith

Problem is: can you predict bathing time? I whis I could. They make heavey crocks that will sit in the bottom of the cage, but they are subject to debris and droppings from above. My Grey bathes in his bowl and seems satisfied, but who knows when he's going to do it? I have seen some that will go into the shower with their owners, but mine is far from that mentality.

Good point. Even the water and food bowls get bombed from above. Hmm. Seems like there must be a better way. He gets so dry in the winter! Sometimes I'll spritz him with water, but it doesn't seem to wet down the feathers enough. A sink with an inch of water makes him very nervous. Oh well, knowing my bird, with a big bowl in the cage he'd probably delight in flinging the water all over the carpet anyways. Thanks for the input. -Faith

I use a spray bottle of the type used for airplants as this is very small. Monty likes showers but Mitzi is less keen. She will, very rarely, decide to bathe in her drinking water bowl and when she does this I take the opportunity to spray her at the same time because on these rare occasions she likes to get really wet. Putting a bowl of water in doesn't work with mine either because they just ignore it. There is a product called Bath Time by Canopy which I use and it does seem very good. It contains substances which go into the feathers and moisturise the skin.

The only time Abby bathes is right after a shower. Can someone explain that great mystery of Abby's Universe? She bathes in her water bowl by stepping into it with one foot, then tossing water all over with her head, climbing and descending the side of the cage and starting all over. It goes on until the floor is splattered for 4+ feet from the cage. That actually seems to be the goal. Great looking forum, by the way. Much more user-friendly than the voy forum. Happy New Year, Everyone! LG

How we understand when he was a bath? We use a spray bottle, but we don't sure if he like that. How the Greys takes showers? What we must to do?

Kiko also hates the bath. I bring him in anyway, and spray him about three times a week. I know you are supposed to do it everyday, or at least I think you are. I just hate to do it to him, but i guess it's for his own good. He gets so excited and crazy that sometimes he actually falls off his shower perch. After that, he is nice and wet!! I guess it's right when you hear African greys do NOT like to be bathed. I feel for all of you who have this small problem, along with me, but it is nice to know I am not the only one who has to occassionally torture my baby.

African Greys need quite high humidity and that is why it is recommended that we spray them every day otherwise their feathers and skin get dry and irritated. As long as they are not getting really agitated it is okay to persist with the spray bottles, but if they really don't like showers keep the humidity up with bowls of water and pot plants. Jane

Thanks Tammy - I did see your post on the old forum too. When I posted here there didn't seem to be too many viewers yet so I went back to the older one. This new forum is great though! Im so relieved to find that we're not the only ones with a stubborn grey! (Imagine that!) That idea of letting him sit on the shower perch for a misting might work for Arthur. I may also try the suggestion of just letting him sit on a rubber mat with the shower on and just bathe himself at his own pace. Thanks guys, for all the advice! (Though I'm not sure Arthur will be overly greatful!) -Faith

Faith...let me know how the rubber mat works with the shower on for Arthur if you end up trying that, as I tried with Zazzy in the beginning (about one and a half yrs ago) and he was absolutely petrified!!! But I might try that again. Thanks, Tammy
