Okay, I had been using pellet-like bedding for Chivalry, and though he was taking great pleasure in playing with it, I thought nothing of that. Someone suggested I could use newspaper instead, so yesterday when I cleaned his cage, I put some down after getting rid of the bedding. He has spent all his time since tearing the paper to shreds, and if I try to get near him (I'm his favorite), he goes ballistic and bites at me. Any suggestions?

I suppose he could be being territorial about it, maybe he thinks you are going to stop him playing with it or take it away. It is better to use paper than anything else so I would stick with it. I have a grid in my cage and the paper is in the tray beneath. They usually ignore it but a while ago Mitzi went through a phase where she would pull it through and shred it up. It was almost as if she was nesting. She did this for a few nights, then stopped completely and hasn't done it since.

He's having way too much fun for the giver to taketh away. You'll need to keep him from getting to the defication places. jane is right, keep a grate between them, Pete gets happy at cage changing time. I give him the envelopes on bill paying days to shread.

The problem is, the top of his cage (where he is doing this) doesn't HAVE a grate between the catch tray and him. It's just...there.

Wal-Mart has replacement grates for ovens, or get one from a junk stove. Clean and cut it to fit, Bingo! Just make sure it is from an oven because the Molybdenum steel will be ok for him. Caution to smooth the cut ends.

Preston, Jane,
I leave newspaper down for Josh when he's in his cage, and he poos in one corner and leaves the rest clean. Do you think it is necessary to have a grate above the floor covering? What difference does it make?

Lidia The grate means that they don't walk about in the mess and get it on their feet. Also, if they are newspaper chewers they don't get it in their beaks. The ink used now is not thought to be a problem although some people say not to use any pages with coloured ink on. Monty and Mitzi have several main areas that they use but I would think if Joshua only uses one corner you wouldn't have a problem. What a clean boy he is!

Oh, Jane, If only that were true ... although he only poops in one corner, he piles everything up there in a sort of parrot boobytrap, wet, poopy, mushy paper that I have to scrape out of the cage. It's such a delight, isn't it? Lidia

Ah I see! A grate would be an advantage then.
I sometimes get the wet paper scenario as well, after Monty has been playing with his toys in the transparent dog bowl I got a while back. He has worked out that rubber ducks can be dunked in and get water inside. Then when he squeezes the duck in his beak the water sprays everywhere.

That is an excellent wheeze! Out of curiosity, how large are the squeezy toys you give him? I cannot imagine Joshua playing that sort of game (I wish he would).

They are about two and a half inches beak to tail, two and a half across and two inches high. The head of the duck is about the size of a cherry tomato. He has some fish as well! It is only Monty who plays with them; Mitzi has never shown the slightest interest in any of them.

It has been my experience that anything that they like and you try to take it away is a challenge to their domain. I have also noticed that if I leave for a number of days (he stays at his second home while I am on extended absences) he is glad to see me when I get back but on the second day will try to punish me with aggressive behavior. We almost have that issue resolved....I think.
