For a while now I've been reading different posts by everyone else and i don't think i've come across anyone who has a grey that won't go on their hand or give them cuddles or anything. I've nearly had Chiko for a month now, and the closest 'freindly' contact he has is when above my cockatiels cage if we hold a monkey nut in our hands if it is near enough he will quickly pinch it from our hands and eat it. I know it takes alot of time to begin training them and everything but where would i begin?

You could try step-up training. This is very useful because once they are trained to step up it becomes an automatic reaction for the bird and you then have more control. Keep offering him food by hand, this helps, especially something soft that he can't snatch so quickly.

You put your hand in front of him, just above his feet and touching his tummy. Then gently nudge his tummy and say "step up" or whatever words you want to use. It will be easier to do this when he is in his cage on a perch because the nudge is meant to make him feel a little unbalanced and he has to move his feet. Give him lots of praise for any action in the right direction. The use of a treat in the other hand might help if he is overly concerned about your hand being near him.

I've had my Mina for 3 weeks now, and I am in the same situation as yours. She never bites and lets us stroke her head, but she is not looking forward for cuddles etc. Let's just keep trying. I will taking Jane's advise on stepping up aswell and see how it goes.

Catherine I know what it feels like to just want a cuddle of your bird or for he/she to play with you, im sooo jealous of most people of this board they can do everything with their bird, your quite lucky too the Mina lets you stroke her head, if my hand goes near Chiko with out food in it he gets so scared and if he's in the cage he will kinda fly around paniking. Hopefully it wont be too long before Chiko and Mina lets us play with them

Catherine and Username (what a strange name you have chosen), It really is a matter of time. Every bird is different, love, patience and consistency will bring you huge rewards, but Mina and Chiko will decide the pace, not you. Hang in there! Lidia

Hello, I know how you both feel. It makes it even worse because Silver can't get enough of cuddles from my hubby! She lets him tickle her head, play with her beak but she bites me! I made it worse by trying to push her - so be patient and let her come to you. I've got Silver following me all round the house now - she just doesn't let me touch her yet!

Lidia- Lol i couldn't think of a username at the time and username just felt appropriate. I'm just really hoping it doesn't take years for Chiko to allow me to hold him and stuff.
Steph- I'm sure Silver will start giving you the same attention as your husband, if not you could start dressing and looking like him then she might think your him and begin to like you too.

I bought a DVD training video from this website and it has worked miracles, from the most unapproachable parrot to nice natured one. You can get them to do amazing things. www.birdtricks.com/The name of the DVD is called "Bird Tricks." It is worth every dime! wgraham13
