I trained Mitzi by first of all using the chosen word or phrase every time so that she got to associate the words with the action. You then watch for the body language and quickly move them to the approved place. Alternatively you can put them on the approved place and say the words. They then get to learn that there are some places they do go and some they don't.

I used to put newspaper on the floor under the cage and made sure there was at least 12" *catchment* area from the outer edge of the cage, it looks messy but it's a very cheap and an easy way to keep the floor clean. NB: I was once told by a breeder of Greys that in the wild they dont soil their own nesting places, so it's probably a natural thing for them to do.

Trinie has it down pat now. For the past two weeks he has not gone while sitting on my hand, only after I return him to his cage or place him on newspapers. He will gently tug on my skin with his beak and fluff his feathers. At first, I didn't know what he was trying to tell me and thought he was tired of sitting on my hand so I would return him to his cage where he would quickly poop and clamber back back onto my hand. Now that He has me trained... LOL.. whenever he gives me the sign he needed the toilet, I would either give him newspaper or take him to his cage.

He constantly amazes me with something new and is proving to me how intelligent and humanlike African greys are. His only setback is that the only intelligible word he says is hello and the rest is gibberish but I am not disappointed because he has far surpassed any expectations that I may have had.
