Hello and Help!! I noticed today that Cochi has less tail feathers. Upon, investigating this, I found them at the bottom of his cage. ( Not there yesterday) The feathers appear bitten off, not pulled. He seems happy, and healthy. He gets a bath often. So..... any advice as to why this is happening? Laura and Cochi

Young greys sometimes do this with their tail feathers. It may be that one got damaged in some way and couldn't be preened so it got chewed off and then he wasn't sure if that was the right one so another one got chewed off as well. It isn't usually related to any other sort of feather plucking or chewing and it seems to be restricted to young birds.

Joshua did this when he was a baby, and ended up with only the very short tail feathers at the back. I can't remember how long it took for them to grow back (it was a long time ago), but they did. Lidia

does joshua lose a lot of feathers at the same time during a molt, or just a few over a long period of time?

When he's moulting, he loses a lot of down feathers and some long feathers, but never enough to look bare. He doesn't tend to pick at his feathers at all, even when they're broken or bent. As I said, when he was a baby he was a little confused by losing tail feathers, and he chewed a few off. But has never done that since then. He does get irritable and cranky when he is having a long moult. The new feather sheaths on his neck irritate him a great deal, but he lets me scratch him under his jaw and the back of his neck to relieve the irritation. Hope that helps. Lidia

Lidia, We are down to one long tail feather, and a stump of new growth. I do not believe he is moulting, he is only five months old. I know he is chewing them although I have never caught him. He seems happy this morning on his playgym. He has been following me all over the house the past few day ( this is new ) Yesterday, I put him on my shower rod while I took a shower so that he could get some humidity. Maybe this might help Thanks for your concern, Laura

Hi Laura,
I woke to a similar problem this morning. I noticed yesterday that some of Charlies feathers looked as though they had been stripped, especially his tail and this morning this has been confirmed with all the bits of feather on the bottom of his cage.
I thought he was really happy until now. i just don't know what to do about this!
Its very distressing!
