The living room is better; there are too many hazards in a kitchen - fumes, temperature changes, general air quality etc.

I agree, a buffer from the cooking atmosphere is important.

My conure and CAG are in the kitchen during a meal but spend most of the rest of out of cage time in the family room or go with me to the bedroom to watch tv. My husband has the tv in the family room either on the outdoor channel or espn or such crap so I watch in my bedroom and they come with me. They want to be wherever I am.
