I think I turned into a paranoid Mom or not real familiar with Amazon Behavior as I am Gray behavior.... Dante my 20 year old Speckled Amazon was doing this thing this weekend Where he was flat backed and wings fanned, and neck feathers up and flapping his wings. Me being a paranoid Mom flew him to the Avain Vet thinking something was physically wrong with Pap (His nickname). Boy did I ever feel stupid but really relieved to learn that my baby has begun to display one of the following...
Flat backing -- aviculturist term for the submissive posture of some Amazon parrots, with or without accompanying wing shivering and/or clucking. Some birds may also revert to baby-like behaviors, begging to be hand fed by their favorite person.
Strutting with tail feathers fanned, neck feathers up and eyes flashing wildly -- This is often (but not always accurately) defined as male behavior and is seen other times of the year as well -- especially when meeting new people. This is probably normal territorial behavior that becomes more frequent and dramatic during nesting time. Don't reach for this bird unless your really want to check your normal healing time.
Thank goodness that is all it was. I was so scared and almost in tears all weekend thinking something was wrong with him.... Thanks for listening...

Deneen I am glad that you took him in even if it was nothing to worry about. So many people wait til the last minute to react to different behavior from their birds.
My Amazon will display the same behaviour all the time, he is quite funny when I have female visitors.

The Avian Vet said he is getting comfortable with me and is finally showing me signs of affection.... She also gave me a lot of good advice about his feathers. They are looking kind of rough at the bottom of his body. She told me to spray Amazons more than Rosalie. Which is fine Dante loves being sprayed.... Rosalie would rather take her own bath. She trimmed his beak a little and cut his toe nails... Gave me some more behavior issues and said he is in good health. So all in all it was a great visit... Dante loves to step up and be on and around you all the time but does not like to be petted. If petted is even a word ;D.... Gave me some advice on that too...

What did he say about the petting?? Sam hates to be touched, I have had him for 10 months and he is 13 years old. WE have an OK relationship. He loves to be held and he likes to go outside with me. He will bite when he doesn't get his way but its not often. He is stick trained so I can use the stick to get him in his cage when he doesn't want to go. It's hard to find good information on Amazons. It's good to have someone to share things with.
